Frequently Asked Questions

Q - What Kind Of GPS Should I Buy?

A - First, determine what you will be using your GPS unit for.  Will it be Driving, Hiking, Hunting, Running, Boating, Fishing?  Next you should shop Product Categories then Features and finally Price.

Q - What features should I consider in my GPS?

A - After you have decided what use your GPS is for and the price that you can afford, then it is time to decide which specific makes and models will fit your need.  If the device is going to stay permanently in your vehicle, then the size of the screen, sound and vehicle mounting are important.  Be sure to check screen readability attributes such as brightness, font size and map clarity.  Is the battery life important?  What about maps?  Do you want it to be waterproof?  Is size and weight important?

Q - Can I use the same GPS in more than one vehicle?

A - Yes.  Most GPS models are easy to move between vehicles. If this is your plan, you'll need to give some thought to the mounting system and power supply.  Temporary mounting systems such as a suction cup or friction mount work with pretty much any vehicle.  Models powered by batteries or from a cigarette lighter provide the most flexibility.

Q - How about Battery Life?

A - If you plan on taking your GPS unit out of the vehicle, then battery power is very important.  Batteries are expensive so make sure that they are rechargeable and have a reasonable charge life (at least 8 hours of continuous use).  If they are not rechargeable, make sure to budget for after market rechargeable batteries and a battery charger.

Q - What Screen Size?

A - When it comes to GPS displays, bigger generally costs more among established brand lines with sizes ranging from about 2.2" wide to 6.1" wide.  The bigger the screen, the easier it will be for you to key in addresses and check out the map at a glance.

Q - What About State GPS Regulations?

A - Some states have specific GPS regulations against windshield mounts.  You should check your state and all states where you will be traveling. NOTICE TO DRIVERS IN CALIFORNIA AND MINNESOTA:  State law prohibits drivers in California and Minnesota from using suction mounts on their windshields while operating motor vehicles.  Other Garmin dashboard or friction mounting options should be used.  (See California Vehicle code Section 26708(a); Minnesota Statutes 2005, Section 169.71)
